Thief’s trapezoid box returns as a console collectible

Canadian listings put a price and a March 2027 date on the physical editions, distinct from the remaster’s software features.

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is getting a physical edition whose most conspicuous feature is the shape of the box. The Trapezoid Edition revives the angled packaging associated with the original PC game's era, but the current retail listings are for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Nostalgia for a PC object is being sold as a console collectible.

The Canadian Video Games Plus listing puts the Switch 2 Trapezoid Edition at CAD104.99 and lists March 20, 2027 as its physical release date, subject to change. That is a retailer's dated physical-product listing, not a worldwide price or a reason to assume every edition of the game releases then.

The premium is visible before the game starts

The same retailer lists the standard Switch 2 edition at CAD59.99 and the SteelBook edition at CAD89.99. The trapezoid version therefore carries a CAD45 premium over the listed standard version. Those prices refer to the same Canadian storefront and currency, making the comparison useful without converting it into a supposed local offer elsewhere.

For a collector, the unusual silhouette is part of the product. It changes how the game looks on a shelf and recalls a period when PC boxes could compete through their shape as well as their artwork. For someone mainly interested in playing, it is a separate purchase consideration from the remaster's features.

The current console listings also should not be stretched into a permanent claim that a PC physical release can never happen. They establish what is being offered now, not every future publishing decision.

What is being remastered

The official Steam description identifies Nightdive's KEX Engine adaptation of Looking Glass's stealth game, including the original Dark Project and Thief Gold material. It lists revised graphics and practical changes such as a weapon-and-item wheel and a mission selector.

Those controls matter because Thief organizes play around observation and movement rather than a constant demand to attack. Light and sound help communicate risk. Making tools easier to select can reduce friction around that decision-making, but it does not establish that the game's balance or atmosphere is improved in every scene. The announcement supplies a feature list, not a hands-on verdict.

The official screenshot accompanying this article retains the game's information-rich view: a guard ahead, a partially obscured route and the player's visibility indicator. The point of the encounter is readable before any confrontation occurs. That is a more useful glimpse of the design than treating resolution alone as the reason to revisit it.

A physical object is not a complete preservation answer

Packaging and long-term access are related but separate questions. A distinctive box does not by itself establish what data is on the supplied medium, whether a download is required or which future updates will remain available. Our Switch 2 and Steam Deck comparison explains why the physical-versus-digital distinction needs that extra detail.

The trapezoid's appeal is more direct: it is a recognizable object from the visual history of PC gaming, returning around a modern version of the game. That can be worth a premium to the right collector. The important buying decision is to know that the shelf object is part of what the extra money purchases, rather than expecting its shape to tell you more about the software than the product listing does.
