League’s 26.22 patch changes what Mel’s defensive timing rewards

Rebuttal destroys projectiles and retaliates instead of reflecting them. The surrounding health and cooldown changes matter as much as the headline redesign.

League of Legends patch 26.22 changes what an opponent should expect from Mel’s defensive ability. Her W now destroys incoming projectiles with an expanding nova and retaliates, rather than reflecting their effects back. That is a change to the interaction itself, not merely a reduction in damage, in Riot’s November 3 patch notes.

Riot pairs the rework with weaker early statistics and stronger scaling. Mel’s base health falls from 640 to 590, while health growth rises from 99 to 107 per level. The intended tradeoff is a less comfortable opening in exchange for more room to develop later. Whether that produces the desired competitive balance will require results from the patch, rather than a prediction based only on the list of changes.

Rebuttal asks a different timing question

The new W expands to a 400-unit radius over 0.75 seconds. It destroys enemy missiles, provides a shield and movement speed to Mel and allies within, then retaliates against destroyed missiles at the end of the nova. Repeated retaliations against the same enemy have reduced damage, with a cap of seven against that target.

For the opposing player, the important change is that a spell’s original effect is no longer simply being sent back through the old reflection mechanic. For Mel, there is a defined expansion and retaliation sequence to consider. Both sides need to learn the new timing rather than carry over every habit from the previous W.

Her other abilities support the shift toward repeated casts. Q receives a cooldown refund when it hits an enemy champion, scaling from 0.5 to one second with champion level. Her ultimate’s cooldown becomes 120/90/60 seconds instead of 120/100/80, leaving its first rank unchanged while improving later ranks. These are specific sources of late-game access to abilities; they do not mean every early exchange has become stronger.

Several smaller changes reward precise reading

Thresh loses two base attack damage, from 56 to 54, and his ultimate loses 50 base damage at each rank. Viktor receives five more health growth per level and a higher ability-power ratio on the initial damage of his ultimate, from 50% to 60%. These are different levers: one trims immediate pressure, while the other restores some scaling after earlier changes.

Yasuo’s Q ratio falls from 105% to 100% total attack damage. That is a five-percentage-point change to the ratio, not a flat 5% reduction to every instance of total Q damage, because its base damage remains in the calculation. Zaahen’s Q cooldown falls from ten to eight seconds at rank one but stays at six seconds at rank five, concentrating the improvement in earlier ability ranks.

These details are more useful than declaring an instant tier list. Build choices, matchup and execution affect how a numerical adjustment turns into a match result; the patch notes establish the changed rules, not a measured win-rate outcome.

Do not mix the game modes

The same release includes ARAM Mayhem augment changes and Classic’s returning historical champion versions. Those sections have their own scope. A Classic-era ability description should not be read as a redesign of that champion in ordinary Summoner’s Rift, and Mayhem-specific augment tuning should not be imported into a normal build guide.

For this patch, Mel is the clearest reason to relearn an encounter rather than merely adjust a number in your head. The familiar visual cue still means danger, but the exchange it produces has changed. Knowing that before casting into it is likely to be more useful than any day-one claim that the patch has already been solved.
