PUBG’s new console presets solve two different control problems
Update 43.2 offers familiarity or consistency without removing existing layouts. The new presets cannot be customized.
PUBG: Battlegrounds' 43.2 console update adds two controller presets built around different ideas of accessibility. PUBG Standard aims to make the first matches easier to learn; Shooter Standard aims to reduce exceptions so a learned action behaves consistently. Neither requires existing players to abandon their saved layout.
The October patch notes scheduled the console deployment for October 22, after the PC update on October 14. The controller changes are console-specific. Plugging a controller into the PC edition does not make this announcement a promise of the same new presets there.
Familiarity and consistency solve different problems
PUBG Standard borrows familiar control patterns from other console games and becomes the default for newcomers. Shooter Standard instead emphasizes placing similar actions consistently and minimizing special-case behavior. Both can be useful, but they answer different frustrations: not knowing what button to try, and knowing the button only to discover that a particular situation changes its meaning.
Krafton's earlier console-experience roadmap identified the accumulation of controls over years of added features as a problem. The October implementation makes the proposed alternatives concrete. It also retains Type A, B, C and Custom, preserving an escape route for players whose habits or accessibility needs are already served by an existing setup.
The two new presets do not support customization. That limitation matters before recommending them to everyone. A layout that is easier to explain can still be less suitable for a player who needs a particular remapping; the retained Custom option remains a distinct choice, not an obsolete menu left behind by the update.
Communication should survive movement
The console message radial now uses the right stick to select an item while the mapped button is held, with release activating the selection. Enemy markers can be used while aiming or not aiming. These changes are aimed at reducing the interruption between seeing something and telling the squad about it.
That has a practical value beyond convenience. A teammate cannot act on information that never gets communicated, and a system that demands too much attention competes with the act of staying alive. Clearer input does not guarantee better teamwork, but it removes one obstacle between a player's intention and the message reaching the group.
The update's map-service report also confirms that console and PC rotations follow different dates. This weekend, console is in the first week of 43.2's rotation while PC has already moved to the second. Guides that mention a map pool without naming the platform can therefore be correct for one audience and wrong for another.
The sensible way to approach the new controls is to try the relevant preset deliberately, rather than change everything immediately before a serious match. The goal is not to use the newest layout. It is to spend less of the next fight thinking about how to tell the game what you already decided to do.
