Serious Sam: The Third Encounter is real, but it does not have a release date

Croteam returns to the Second Encounter storyline with a PC project in early development. The first images establish its visual direction, not its final performance.

Croteam and Devolver Digital have announced Serious Sam: The Third Encounter for PC, returning to the storyline of The Second Encounter. The useful news is the project's identity, not a release countdown: the official Steam page says it is in early development and has no announced launch date.

The pitch puts arcade shooting, large enemy groups and cooperative play at the center. For people who associate the series with constantly moving through a crowded battlefield, that establishes the intended direction. It does not yet establish how well the finished game will balance that movement, its weapons or its encounters.

A title with a specific history

The Third Encounter points back to a particular predecessor. The original Second Encounter dates to February 2002 and explicitly combines solo arcade action with cooperative play. The new title is presented as a continuation of that story, rather than a remake of the older game. No knowledge of its ending is needed to understand the announcement, and we will leave it there.

That naming choice gives the project a clear expectation to meet. Returning to an established identity can be more demanding than simply putting a familiar character on a new box: players bring memories of how the action flows, not just what its hero looks like. The announcement offers a direction for that continuity, while the game remains too early for a verdict.

What the first images actually show

The published screenshots show brightly colored rocky environments, strong enemy silhouettes and both a first-person view and an external view of Sam. They are marked as work in progress. Their color and composition are visible evidence; smooth performance, final enemy density and the feel of aiming are not things a still image can demonstrate.

That makes the images useful without turning them into a review. A reader can inspect the visual approach and recognize the series' character. Claims about responsiveness or the quality of the campaign will need a playable game, rather than a confident interpretation of a screenshot.

Italian is listed, but the game is still being made

The current Steam language table includes Italian interface, audio and subtitles. That is a useful indication for Italian players, with the important qualification that it is a listing for an unfinished product. It should be checked again nearer release rather than treated as a tested description of a final build.

For readers following PC gaming, there is now a concrete new project to follow, with source images and a declared creative direction. A wishlist entry can express interest without requiring an invented launch window. Sam has a next encounter; the calendar does not have its date yet.
