Wolverine and FC 27 split PlayStation’s September charts
Sony’s new download tables show a regional split at the top. They cannot tell us the sales gap—or which game Italy preferred.
Marvel’s Wolverine led September’s PS5 downloads in the US and Canada, while EA Sports FC 27 took first place in Europe. Sony’s tables, published on October 22, put the two games in reversed positions across the regions. It is a clear difference in order, but the figures needed to measure the size of that difference are not public in this report.
That is the useful way to read these charts: as a record of relative demand within a defined digital storefront, platform and month. They are not a worldwide sales total, an audience census or a verdict on which game people enjoyed more.
Europe has its own ordering
Below the leading pair, the European PS5 top ten includes The Blood of Dawnwalker, Halloween, Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, NBA 2K27, Forza Horizon 5 and Control Resonant, in that order. The list mixes new releases with games whose commercial life stretches well beyond one launch window.
That mixture matters when interpreting a monthly table. A chart position is produced by the downloads occurring in that month, regardless of how long a title has been available. It cannot tell us whether a returning game benefited from a price change, an update or word of mouth unless there is additional evidence for that explanation.
For Italian readers, the European chart is relevant regional context. It is not an Italy-only ranking. A game leading a multinational table need not lead every country within it, and the published data does not let us reconstruct those national results.
A rank cannot supply a sales margin
Two adjacent games could be separated by a small number of downloads or by a very large one. Without quantities, describing one as narrowly beating the other—or dominating it—would add information the source does not contain.
Revenue is another missing variable. Different prices, editions and promotions can change the money generated by the same number of transactions. The PlayStation Store is a retail environment with those distinctions; its download ordering is not automatically a revenue ordering.
The same caution applies when comparing this report with Control Resonant’s announced sales milestone. A cumulative sales statement and a one-month regional download position answer different questions. Neither needs to contradict the other for the numbers to be unsuitable for direct comparison.
Keep the neighboring tables separate
Sony also publishes PS4, PS VR2 and free-to-play lists. Their separate placement is useful: a free download and a paid PS5 purchase do not represent identical decisions, while the available audience differs between hardware platforms.
The strongest conclusion here is consequently a bounded one. Wolverine and FC 27 exchanged the top two PS5 places across Sony’s two reported regions in September. That is enough to show that one universal “winner” would flatten a real difference. The chart becomes more informative when we stop asking it for numbers it never supplied.
