Pokémon Unite’s shutdown comes with an offline Library—and a download deadline

The November update preserves parts of a collection locally. It will not keep online battles running or guarantee recovery on a replacement device.

Pokémon Unite will end service on March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC, but a new Library feature is intended to preserve part of a player’s collection and history after the servers close. There is an important condition: the necessary Library data must be downloaded before shutdown. Keeping the app installed without completing that preparation is not enough.

The official end-of-service notice covers both Nintendo Switch and mobile versions. It marks the end of online battles, not the launch of a replacement offline edition with the same competitive experience.

What the Library can keep

The feature announcement describes access to acquired licences, Holowear, trainer cosmetics, achievements and other records, along with the Practice Area. Players will be able to revisit parts of what they earned, rather than have the application become an entirely blank endpoint.

That is a narrower form of preservation than keeping the original game running. A collection viewer can retain personal history, and practice access can preserve some interaction with characters and effects. Neither recreates matchmaking, live competition or the social circumstances in which those items were obtained.

The distinction is worth making without dismissing the effort. An online game can leave several different things behind: its rules, its audiovisual assets, a player’s records and the possibility of playing together. The Library addresses some of those layers, while service closure removes others.

The step that needs to happen before March

The Library arrives with the November 12 update. According to the publisher, normal play or first access to the Library after that update will trigger the required asset download. Players need to let it complete before the service deadline; the announcement says later acquisitions and records will synchronise until closure.

The data is stored locally and generally does not transfer to a replacement device. The publisher also warns that support for the Library will not continue after service ends. Deleting the application or losing its data can therefore have a different consequence after March than it would while a live service could restore an account’s state.

A local record is still a fragile record

For players who want a lasting personal memory, the Library should not be confused with an indefinitely recoverable cloud archive. Device failure and replacement remain relevant, and the publisher’s limitations are part of the feature rather than an incidental footnote.

The useful action is to complete the update and download while the service remains available, then understand what is actually preserved on that device. Pokémon Unite’s farewell offers more than a final login screen. Whether an individual player can retain that small piece of the game depends on doing the preparation before the servers are gone.
