M6 reaches MacBook Pro and iMac. The useful upgrade depends on the machine it replaces

Preorders begin October 28, with deliveries from November 6. CPU options, memory, ports and different comparison baselines complicate a simple chip-generation verdict.

Apple is bringing M6 to the 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac, with preorders announced for October 28 and deliveries from November 6. The practical change is not simply that two more Macs share a chip name. The iMac moves from M4, while the entry-level MacBook Pro moves from M5: the size of the advertised improvement depends heavily on which computer is being replaced.

The MacBook Pro announcement specifies a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Apple quotes US starting prices of $1,999 for the laptop. The iMac announcement starts at $1,499, with a choice between two-port and four-port configurations. Those are US prices, not a worldwide tax-inclusive comparison.

An M6 badge does not describe the whole machine

The base iMac uses a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU; the higher configuration has 12 of each and four Thunderbolt ports. The laptop has the 12-core configuration. Memory and storage choices also differ, making a comparison based only on the processor family incomplete.

The desktop's 24-inch 4.5K display remains central to its proposition. It packages the screen, camera, speakers and computer into one purchase. That can simplify a workspace, but ties the next computer upgrade to a display someone might otherwise have kept. A laptop instead carries its display and battery wherever the work happens; an external monitor can extend that workspace without becoming part of the computer itself.

Neither design is automatically more economical. Someone already owning a good monitor is making a different purchase from someone furnishing a desk from scratch. The cost of adapters, storage and peripherals belongs in that decision even when it is missing from the headline starting price.

The baseline behind the performance claims

Apple advertises up to 30 percent faster graphics for the M6 laptop against M5, alongside larger gains against M1. These are manufacturer tests of particular workloads and configurations. They do not mean every application becomes 30 percent faster, or that an older machine must be replaced because a newer one wins an export benchmark.

The distinction becomes particularly important for local AI. Memory capacity determines whether a model and its working data fit comfortably; bandwidth and compute affect how quickly supported operations run. A larger neural-engine figure cannot, on its own, establish how a particular application divides work between the CPU, GPU and specialized hardware.

Apple's examples include model prompt processing, rendering and code compilation. Those are useful categories for matching a claim to a workload. They should remain separate: a gain in the time to begin an AI response does not establish the same improvement in every subsequent generated token or in an unrelated editing task.

Connectivity can outlast the first benchmark

Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 modernize both families, while the iMac offers faster wired Ethernet in supported configurations. The benefit still depends on the network and peripherals at the other end. Buying a newer radio does not increase the capacity of an old router or an internet connection.

The more revealing upgrade question is which constraint repeatedly interrupts work today. If a project outgrows memory, choose capacity; if a desk depends on several devices, count usable ports; if work moves between locations, weigh portability and battery claims against the actual routine. M6 provides more headroom, but the worthwhile purchase is the configuration that removes the bottleneck someone encounters every week.
