LG vs Samsung TVs: the panel family matters more than the logo
OLED, QLED, smart-TV software and HDR support are different decisions. Match the range to your room and sources before comparing prices.
LG versus Samsung is not the same decision as OLED versus QLED. Both companies sell several television families, and the technology inside the chosen range can matter more than the name on the bezel. LG is an obvious place to begin an OLED shortlist; Samsung deserves attention across OLED and quantum-dot LCD ranges. Neither company's entire catalogue inherits the qualities of its best television.
For a useful comparison, separate three decisions: the display technology, the features of the exact television and the software you will use every evening. That prevents a premium-panel demonstration from selling you an unrelated entry-level set.
Read the family name before the brand promise
LG's television catalogue includes OLED, QNED and other LCD ranges. OLED uses self-emitting pixels; LCD televisions control light supplied by a backlight. That distinction explains why a dark scene with bright small objects is a useful demonstration: controlling individual emitting pixels and controlling larger backlight zones are different jobs.
Samsung's QLED explanation describes quantum dots used with an LCD backlight. QLED is therefore not another spelling of OLED. Neo QLED belongs to Samsung's LCD offering, while Samsung also sells OLED televisions. Mini LED describes a backlight approach, not a separate guarantee that every part of an image will look better.
For a dark-room film viewer, OLED's pixel-level light control is a strong reason to start there. For a bright shared living room, investigate brightness and reflection handling on specific candidates from either brand. Room light, viewing angle and screen finish are more informative than assuming one company's televisions are always brighter. Manufacturer demonstrations are not independent measurements.
Where the brands differ in everyday use
LG's webOS and Samsung's Tizen organise applications, settings and connected services differently. Spend time with the menus you will actually use: changing inputs, finding subtitles, opening a streaming service and adjusting picture modes. A television can have an excellent panel and still be irritating if a routine action is buried.
LG has a documented webOS Re:New upgrade programme for eligible televisions. Eligibility matters; a programme announcement is not a promise covering every older LG. Samsung's account requirements and supported smart services should likewise be checked on the regional product page. An external streaming box can reduce dependence on the built-in interface, but adds cost and another remote or control path.
HDR formats need similar precision. LG advertises Dolby Vision on supported televisions. Samsung's ranges emphasise HDR10+; verify the exact format list of both candidates and the services or players you use. A missing optional format does not make ordinary HDR disappear, and a supported format does not establish better tone mapping by itself.
Advantages and compromises to weigh
| Starting point | Useful strengths | What can undermine the choice |
|---|---|---|
| LG | Several OLED tiers, supported Dolby Vision options and webOS upgrade commitments for eligible sets | Transferring OLED expectations to a different panel family; assuming all models share ports or update eligibility |
| Samsung | OLED and varied QLED/Neo QLED choices, with connected-home and smart-TV options to investigate | Treating QLED as equivalent to OLED; assuming a premium anti-reflection treatment exists throughout the range |
For games, check the number of inputs that support the required refresh rate and variable refresh rate, especially if a soundbar will occupy one port. A single compatible input may be enough for one console and inconvenient for a console-plus-PC setup. For films, inspect subtitles over dark backgrounds, faces and slow camera movement rather than judging only colourful demonstration footage.
Let the room settle the shortlist
Italian buyers should verify the full local model code, tuner specifications, application availability and stand dimensions. A review of the same marketing family in another country may concern a different size or configuration. Compare the delivered price, including installation and any bracket, rather than just the screen's discount.
Start with LG if its OLED range and supported cinema features match your room and sources. Start with Samsung if one of its OLED or LCD combinations fits your lighting, connections and smart-home routine better. Then cross-check the other brand at the same size and price. The television you live with is a panel in a particular room, not the winner of a logo contest.
